The Challenge Diver, which made its debut in 1977, has a unique backstory. In 1983, six years after the model’s release, a Challenge Diver was found washed up on Long Reef Beach in Sydney, Australia. Despite the watch being heavily encrusted with barnacles from its long immersion in the sea, no water had seeped in, and the mechanism was still in perfect working order. The latest 2022 Mechanical Diver 200m model inherits all the design cues and attitude of the original Challenge Diver, while adding an improved case and a movement better adapted to present-day needs.

The case is made of lightweight, scratch-resistant Super Titanium™. While the diameter is the same as the original Challenge Diver, it is also thinner, making for a snugger fit on the wrist. The sapphire glass has a classic look: flat on the top, domed on the inside and with straight-cut sloping sides to create a sense of volume.

This model features the Caliber 9051, a movement that uses anti-magnetic materials in the hairspring and other components to achieve enhanced magnetic resistance.* It’s perfect for the way we live now with our smartphones seldom out of reach. It will also work happily on boats equipped with a magnetic steering compass.

^* Meets the JWCA requirement for a Type 2 antimagnetic watch meaning that it maintains its performance when placed at 1 centimeter from a magnetic field of up to 16,000 A/m generated by any ordinary electronic device.

Duratect DLC is used for the case and bracelet, making for a watch that’s not only scratch resistant, but is glossy, lustrous and smooth to the touch. Nothing beats CITIZEN’s proprietary surface treatment when it comes to evoking the mysterious darkness of the ocean depths.

The grey-black gradation of the dial evokes the glimmer of sunlight penetrating the deepest and darkest depths of the ocean. The resulting ambience is dreamlike, even magical.
