CITIZEN joins the Leather Working Group (LWG)to promote the use of sustainable leather
On April 1, 2023, Citizen Watch became a member of the Leather Working Group (LWG), an international non-profit organization dedicated to conserving the natural environment and providing consumers with safe, responsible leather.
The Leather Working Group is a global environmental organization comprised of tanneries, traders, suppliers, technical experts, as well as brands and retailers. The Group now has more than 1,800 member organizations in 65 countries worldwide. LWG certification is granted to a select group of tanneries that meet its stringent international standards. Each organization must undergo a survey of their environmental measures, including the safety of chemicals used in leather manufacturing processes, wastewater treatment, and energy use.
CITIZEN is expanding its use of environmentally-conscious materials as part of efforts to create a more sustainable society. The company is proactively procuring leather for its watch straps from LWG-certified tanneries. Currently, 60% of the leather used for CITIZEN brand watches is procured from LWG-certified tanneries. The company aims to increase this figure to more than 90%. CITIZEN’s membership of the LWG will help to make the entire leather industry more sustainable.
