Our success in creating a two-piece case construction using titanium, a notoriously hard-to-process material, enabled us to add elegant design features such as two-tone colouring and different polishes for individual surfaces. The sheer breadth of these effects gives the case a rich expressiveness with its appearance changing depending on the viewing angle or the lighting conditions.

Born of CITIZEN machining and polishing technologies.CITIZEN has spent 50 years refining its technologies for machining and polishing titanium. That technological mastery is on full display in the clean lines and sharp edges of the case and in the unique design of the band. The sides of the case have been machined to create concavities at 2 and 4 o’clock. Seen head-on, the resulting design visually de-emphasizes the push buttons, whilst at the same time offering easy-to-press functionality. The concave surfaces around the push buttons and the crown are styled to evoke the thrust chamber of a rocket engine’s nozzle extension.

Every link of the band features a highly precise and uniform hairline polish. Of particular note are the perfectly balanced lines thrusting upwards to the ridge of the band’s triangular prisms, which endow each link with a sculptural presence and give the whole model a unique accent.

Stainless steel is easy to polish to a sheen. By contrast, titanium is known for its rather dull and muted grey colour. Conventional wisdom long had it that producing titanium watches in an array of colours was difficult, if not downright impossible. Duratect, CITIZEN’s proprietary surface-hardening technology, changed everything, finally making a rich range of colours possible.
After decades of research and development, there are now 11 versions of Duratect, each with a different colour and hardness value. Two versions of Duratect are used in this model: Duratect DLC (which will be used in the HAKUTO-R lunar exploration programme) and Duratect Sakura Pink.
Enjoy titanium’s natural gentleness on the skin and wrist comfort, along with enhanced scratch-resistance, plus an elegant two-tone design combining intense black with Sakura Pink. The 50th anniversary mark is stamped into the watch case back, which is coated with Duratect Sakura Pink, to make this already rare model even more special.

In the 1960s, as the whole world excitedly followed the Apollo programme, CITIZEN engineers began pondering whether titanium, a material then being used for spacecraft, could not also be used for watches. In other words, Super Titanium™ has its roots in genuine “moon shot” thinking! Now, 50 years later, as technology partner to the HAKUTO-R lunar exploration programme, CITIZEN is about to expand its titanium technology to a universe far beyond watches. While encapsulating all the advancements in Super Titanium™ technology over the last 50 years, this model points to the technology’s broadening role by referencing the concept of space in both its functional and design aspects.

Let’s start with function. The model is equipped with Satellite Wave GPS technology which receives position information and a time signal from GPS satellites orbiting roughly 20,000 kilometres above the earth. This enables you to get the precise time and date within seconds wherever you are on earth. Since the display automatically self-adjusts, you can get the precise time whether you are in the desert, out on the ocean, or on a snowy mountain peak.

In design terms, the overall look of the model is inspired by satellites. Meanwhile, the multilayered structure of the watch face, which consists of components arranged into six distinct strata for spatial depth, is designed to evoke the infinite reaches of space. We were able to create this unique watch face—the personality of the watch—thanks to CITIZEN’s outstanding assembly technology and the precision components which we manufacture in-house. Despite its complex and distinct multilayered structure, the watch has passed the full battery of CITIZEN in-house tests and is certified shock resistant.
