Features 01
Black-dyed Tosa washi paper, the world’s thinnest washi, from the island of Shikoku. Gold leaf from Kanazawa, a centre of gold leaf production for more than 400 years. Sunago-maki, a decorative technique from the lacquerware workshops of Aizu-Wakamatsu that involves the sprinkling on of shredded gold leaf. The genuinely one-of-a-kind dial fuses all these traditional materials and techniques from different regions of Japan with CITIZEN’s advanced watchmaking technology as exemplified by Eco-Drive. It was produced in collaboration with Hidakawashi in Kochi Prefecture, which made the ultra-thin washi paper, and URUSHI SAKAMOTO, a long-established lacquerware workshop in Aizu-Wakamatsu in Fukushima Prefecture, which did the gold-leaf decoration.
Features 02
Because Eco-Drive runs by converting light into energy, the dials of Eco-Drive watches need to be permeable to light. With this watch, however, light permeability was a double challenge: The black washi paper used for the dial has a naturally low light-transmittance level, something which is only compounded when gold leaf is sprinkled on top of it.
Further complicating matters, the black washi and gold leaf dial was designed to evoke the image of freshly mined gold ore: mostly black with random speckles and clusters of gold. To achieve this look while maintaining the appropriate level of light permeability, the amount of gold leaf had to be strictly controlled. The resulting process was extremely labour-intensive. The shredded gold leaf was placed into a special tubular sieve, shaken out into a receptacle, then glued to the dial one piece at a time, after which the light transmittance of every dial was individually measured. This long series of steps culminated in 350 beautiful dials, every one of which is truly distinctive and unique.

Worldwide Limited Edition of 350 Pieces

A dial of black Tosa washi paper is adorned with flakes of gold leaf from Kanazawa individually put in place using the traditional sunago-maki (“sand-sprinkle”) technique. Because every dial is handmade by a veteran craftsman, no two models have the same design. Every single exemplar of this limited edition is truly one of a kind.
The eagle symbolises The CITIZEN’s twin commitments to “looking ahead and pursuing the ideal” and to “becoming an integral part of users’ lives.” The mark is discreetly engraved on the dial and crown of some models.
The CITIZEN watches are made at CITIZEN's special watch workshop nestled deep in the Nagano countryside. They are hand-assembled down to the last component by our highly experienced master watchmaking Meisters.
