The art of Washi
Two kinds of paper: An infinity of shadows
We wanted to create four self-contained worlds that express the four seasons through tones and shadows. To do this, we chose to use Tosa washi for the dial. Tosa washi is one of the top three traditional Japanese washi paper varieties. We use two different types: Tengujoshi, whose extraordinary thinness results in a unique texture; and Unryu (“Cloud Dragon”) paper which has a bold tactility because of the unbroken fibre strands in it. The Unryu paper CITIZEN uses is custom made for us and features fibres of a length and in a proportion found nowhere else. Getting the Unryu fibres into the most beautiful possible arrangement became an obsession.
We also devised a special double-layered structure to highlight the washi’s visual appeal. Rather than printing directly on the washi, we placed a transparent top plate on top of it. The top plate’s gradations highlight the delicate, ever-changing tones of the washi.
Responsible Leather
Rigorous audits. Best practice certification
CITIZEN is committed to making a better future. As part of our sustainable watchmaking efforts, we have started sourcing leather from tanneries that are in compliance with Leather Working Group (LWG)* standards. The Iconic Nature Collection’s crocodileskin straps use leather from LWG certified tanneries. We are determined to reduce the negative environmental and human impacts of our products. Using LWG certified leather is one of a series of initiatives designed to ensure that everyone who wears a CITIZEN watch can do so with enjoyment and a clear conscience.
Leather Working Group (LWG) is an international not-for-profit organization. Its members include brands, tanneries and chemical suppliers. LWG evaluates the safety and environmental performance etc. of the leather manufacturing process and awards certification only to tanneries that pass its rigorous audits.
