Features 01

An unrelenting focus on
accuracy and aesthetics

Designed to combine a strong aesthetic with sustained accurate timekeeping, the Caliber 0200 mechanical movement originates in a complete rethink of our approach to machining and finishing. The Caliber 0210 features a date display for enhanced practicality. These two very special movements draw on CITIZEN’s design philosophy as an integrated watch manufacturer and our deep expertise in component-processing technologies and decorative techniques.

Accuracy

Precision components
for precise timekeeping

Both calibers use a free-sprung balance wheel, the optimum mechanism for sustained accurate timekeeping. Extreme precision in the machining of components is required to craft a free-sprung balance wheel, so we developed a whole new manufacturing process for it. The balance wheel we created is at once a precision component and a thing of beauty.
We further enhanced the precision of the individual components by drawing on the reservoir of parts-manufacturing technology we have developed over decades of making Eco-Drive movements. Our use of the LIGA fabrication process for making the escapement is an example of this. As a result, we achieved average daily accuracy of -3/+5 seconds, a level in excess of the ISO3159 chronometer standard.
The watches (fully assembled but with the bracelet not yet attached) undergo 17 days of in-house testing in six positions and three temperature bands. Only if they pass this rigorous assessment are they issued with our official Caliber 02 Standard Certification.

Accuracy is adjusted by loosening or tightening small weights known as masselottes, meaning that adjustments can be made without having to interfere with the hairspring.
Located between the balance wheel and the gears, the escapement plays a key role in ensuring the watch’s accuracy. The escapement is made using the LIGA fabrication process, a technology CITIZEN mastered when making electronic devices.

Aesthetics

A movement of refined design

The individual components must have beautiful finishes—and they must then be assembled to form a beautiful whole. Such is the philosophy behind the Caliber 0200 and the Caliber 0210. The movement layout, which highlights the beautifully finished balance wheel and the gears as they extend from the barrel, is highly distinctive.

A variety of different finishing techniques—diamond-cut, satinage, colimaçonnage and perlage—are used for the main plate and the bridges to in turn accentuate the finishes of the gears and balance wheel. Note the gorgeous sense of depth created by the contrast between the diamond cut of the bridges and the satin hairline finish of the gears they support.
The same obsession with detail can be seen in the way the mirror finishes of the screw heads and the chamfering of the screws’ outer rim and grooves direct attention to the rhythmical movement of the balance wheel. Several of these decorative techniques draw on the know-how of Switzerland-based La Joux-Perret. The unrivalled aesthetics of the Caliber 0200 and Caliber 0210 are only possible thanks to the fusion of Japanese and Swiss technology.
